Twice a week I walk to the beach near my house to teach yoga at the water’s edge. Last week I was getting ready to cross the street to get to the sand, when I spotted this hammock hanging between two of the palm trees. It was a Wednesday morning, at about 8:00 am. It struck me that it had been a long time since I had seen a hammock hanging between two palm trees. This hammock was hanging sandwiched between a very busy highway sidewalk , positioned next to a bus stop, and the sandy beach and ocean. I grew up in a culture in which most households had a hammock. Afternoon naps in a hammock were common place and taken for granted. To see that hammock on this morning, reminded me of the importance of taking time out every day for a break, if not in a hammock, in a place that gives you peace and a sense of freedom. Don’t let the days pass you by without that. It’s as important as the air we breathe for our health. And by all means give a hammock a try.
